A comforter is a small number of decisions made in the right order: size, warmth, fill, fabric, and set contents. Get those five right and the rest is just color. Here’s the short version of how to choose a comforter without overthinking it.

1. Size — buy for the bed, not just the label

A comforter should drape over the sides of the mattress, not just cover the top. If you like extra drop, or you share the bed and fight over cover, size up. Above all, confirm the actual size on the listing — the EXQ Home cream and black sets are Queen, while the dark blue tufted and navy are Full. Our comforter size chart has the dimensions.

2. Warmth — match your climate and how you sleep

The most common mistake is buying too warm. If your room runs cold or you’re a cold sleeper, a plush, insulating faux-fur comforter is ideal. If your room is warm or you sleep hot, a lighter fill — or a lightweight quilt — will serve you better year-round. (More on this in are faux-fur blankets too hot.)

3–5. Fill, fabric, and set

Then pick the feel (plush faux-fur weight vs. airy down loft), a fabric and color for the room (neutral is safe; dark hides life; pale shows it), and check what’s in the set — a complete 3-piece includes matching pillowcases, so the bed is done in one box. Browse by texture in best faux-fur comforter sets.
